Bandula Senadeera M.V, located in the Karandeniya area, is an eminent school which boasts of a host of remarkable achievements, both in the curricular and extracurricular fields, over the past few years.
Founded in 1892 as a village school, it was named the Koswathumana Buddhist School and after 14 years its management was handed over to the Colombo Buddhist Society.
In 1955, the private Buddhist school was taken over by the Education Ministry of Sri Lanka. Later in 1978 it was conferred with the Maha Vidyalaya status and named Bandula Senadeera Maha Vidyalaya. The school consists of a primary and secondary section, with classes ranging from Grades 1 to 13. As a 1C school they offer only the Arts and Commerce streams for their Advanced Levels.
Bandula Senadeera MV has produced several distinguished students throughout its 120-year history. Additionally, the school creates an atmosphere ideal for its students’ overall advancement with fully-equipped science laboratories, Aesthetic units, a spacious playground, an ICT unit, a language unit and a bilingual unit. The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Center at the school adds immensely to each student’s IT knowledge.
At present there are approximately 1000 students enrolled at the school with an academic staff numbering 40, all of whom are amply supported by the school’s dedicated Principal, R. Rajapaksha and Vice Principal, N. Wickramasinghe.
Bandula Senadeera MV has excelled in academics and has shown strong results in their Grade 5 scholarship, G.C.E. O/L and A/L examinations, and quite a few of its students have succeeded in gaining entrance into universities.
Bandula Senadeera offers an extensive range of opportunities for students to become involved in different extracurricular activities. They have displayed their talent in provincial as well as island-wide competitions. Shavinthika Lakruwani emerged first in the province in the Computer
Software competition. Supun Jayasanka took home top honours at the All Island dancing competition.
Furthermore, the school has achieved glory in several other spheres, especially in Aesthetics. They have won numerous national,
provincial and zonal medals in Drama, Dancing, Music and Language competitions.
Despite all this success, they still suffer from a lack of adequate resources and facilities. However, the principal and staff have done their utmost to turn Bandula Senadeera MV into one of the top emerging schools in the Southern Province.
