Hakeem, Law College head in pow wow tomorrow
View(s):By Namini Wijedasa
Justice Minister Rauf Hakeem will meet Law College Principal Dr. W.D. Rodrigo tomorrow to discuss allegations that the results of the 2012 law entrance exam had been manipulated to favour Tamil medium applicants.
Asked whether he had interfered in the selection process to ensure that more Tamil medium students—specifically Muslims—entered Law College, Mr. Hakeem replied, “What nonsense. Some of these chauvinist elements are barking up the wrong tree.”
Minister Hakeem said he would make a statement in Parliament once he gathered more evidence to prove that “there was some hanky panky” in the allegations.
“I will get the necessary figures and place them before Parliament once Law College authenticates them,” Mr. Hakeem countered. “I want to make comparisons with statistics in previous years to check whether these are just allegations. From all what I have understood up to now, it looks like the result of a rivalry of some sort,” he said.
“The Law College principal has himself said he is convinced there is nothing wrong and that the students got through purely on merit,” he continued. “I’m collecting various other details after which I will expose a few things,” he said.
