Uniforms sans pockets, 24-hour CCTV for Exam Dept. print division to plug leaks

Twenty-four-hour CCTV surveillance, as well as pocketless uniforms are to be introduced for workers in the Examination Department’s printing section, to arrest the leaking of examination papers.

The new measures are now being put in place after the recent leak of the Ordinary Level examination’s Science paper to a tuition master now in remand custody.

Examinations Commissioner W.M.N.J .Pushpakumara said mobile phones would also be strictly prohibited inside the printing section, while a team of supervisors will be appointed to inspect the printing of examination papers.

“CCTV camera would be installed at each printing machine, with recording capacity of up to three months,” he said.

Suspects of the O/L Science paper leak, Sampath Aththatage and four others were ordered to be remanded till January 10, by Magistrate Ms. Lanka Jayarathne, following the second hearing on Friday.

Two computers and a scanning machine were produced in court and the Criminal Investigation Department officials sought permission from court to forward these items to the University of Colombo for further tests.
