Thilini Thathsarani carried away “The Up and Coming Designer of the Year” award at the finals of the “Up and Coming Designer of the Year” contest 2012 organised by Zainab Ammarah.

The contest held on December 18 at Water’s Edge for the fifth consecutive year attracted some 260 entries from around the island. The first runner-up was Sherine Weerawansa while Thushi Jayasekara was adjudged second runner-up.

The award for the most dedicated designer was won by Biyanga Subasinghe.
The finals saw the designers create their own designs with the silver screen in mind with each contestant having to pick a movie and design for it. Thilini Thathsarani’s theme was Step Up 3, Sherine Weerawansa picked Shall We Dance while Thushi Jayasekara chose to create for Desperately Seeking Susan.

Other themes saw Shamendra Kulathilaka go for Bride Wars, Shanika Samarakkody- Motorcycle Diaries, Sandini Herath- The secret of Kells, Christiana de Silva- Ice Princess, Kalathri Palliyaguruge- Angora, Nishadi Gurusinghe- Alice in Wonderland, Biyanga Subasinghe- Avatar, Shehani Seneviratne- Cat Woman, Chethiya Weeramanthri- Moulin Rouge, Avishka Galhena- Marie Antoinette, Sudeera Lakpriya Chandrasena- Apocalypto, Michelle Melanie- Breaking Dawn Part 1, Kazun Jayasinghe- Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Shavindra Somathilaka- Hunger Games, Sidhra Yasseen-Pretty Woman, Shari Weerabangsa- Snow White and the Huntsman, and Melissa Hassen- Princess Diaries.

The first category on the ramp was casual wear, with the models showing off a range from pantsuits to dresses. The award for the best casual wear was won by Kazun Jayasinghe. The sportswear category saw Thilini Thathsarani come up a winner with her glow-in-the-dark outfits. The third segment, Resort and summer wear was won by Sherine Weerawansa. Chethiya Weeramanthri won the evening wear segment.

The judges for the finals were Thushara Wickramanayake, Chanaka Perera, Vincent Silva, Danny Mc Atamney, and Dharshini Bulathsinhala.
