A new web portal has been created which would end the hassle of selecting a course of study or to find a job for young people that matches their qualifications and for the employer to obtain the services of the best person.

These comments were made to the Business Times (BT) by Kamal Abeysinghe, Chairman, EDEX (Education and Careers Exhibition) on the sidelines of a media briefing held this week, in Colombo to announce the holding of the EDEX Expo 2013 – Education and Careers Exhibition from 18 to 20 January at the BMICH and at the Kandy City Centre on 25 and 26 January.

At the media briefing, Mr Abeysinghe said that among the participants of these exhibitions there would be more than 250 foreign universities from over 20 countries from regions like North America, Europe, SAARC Region and countries like Russia, China, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.

At these EDEX Exhibitions in addition to services like career guidance counseling, there would also be Career Guidance Seminars with free inclusive of an onsite psychometric test to guide students to select their best suited careers. Mr Abeysinghe said that they would be celebrating their 10th anniversary by introducing another mid-year exhibition which would then be held in August every year.
Speaking to the BT, he recollected the achievements and hard work for the last 10 years by a set of volunteers and noted that they were helping students and their parents in leading them to diverse tertiary and career opportunities that exist and guiding them towards many lucrative careers.

He said the new web portal www.edex.lk would soon end the hassle of job hunting as employers could obtain the services of the best qualified personnel with the system providing an effective matching device for both parties online. Anybody could access these services free of charge.

He said they are trying to do their best in this venture in helping the youth find the careers and furthering the higher education of their choice.

Responding to a query by a journalist as to the quantum of profits EDEX has made by this exhibition exercise, Mr Abeysinghe said that last year it was around Rs 17 million, but it would be slightly less this year as the cost has increased by around 30 per cent compared to last year.

There was a reflection on the ‘saga of what is called free education’ prevailing in the country, at this briefing, when it was mentioned that the intake for national universities would be only about 20,000. It was recently mentioned by Sujeewa Rajapakse, President, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka that along with other similar institutes their enrollment figures are around 75,000 to 80,000.

Nasser Majeed, Marketing Director, Singer (Sri Lanka) PLC, one of the sponsors of the event, said that to coincide with their 160th anniversary they have offered some donations to 160 rural schools.

Such donations have helped remote schools with the provision of drinking water, toilets and also, electricity connection in paving the way for the use of computers.
