IESL –Sabaragamuwa Centre AGM held at Ratnapura
View(s):The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) SabaragamuwaCentre, held its Annual General Meeting on Thursday, 20th Dec, 2012 at Sapthapadhi Hotel, Ratnapura in the presence of a large gathering of its members, distinguished guests and special invitees. Eng. Tilak De Silva, President of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka, the parent body of the Centre, was the Chief Guest while Eng. ArjunaManamperi, Chairman -ICT Committee of the IESL was a special invitee to the event. Eng. M.R. Ranathunga, Project Director – Lighting, Ratnapura, CEBwas the Guest Speaker of the occasion.
The IESL is the premier professional body for the engineering profession in the country. Its vision is to be among the leading professional institutions and a Centre for Excellence and Leadership in the field of Engineering and Technology in Asia.The institution has embarked on making allIESLCentres which are the provincial arms of the institution to be better positioned to provide more dynamic services of real time benefit to its members serving in the provinces. Rapid transformation is now underway at the IESL headquarters in Colombo with the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to break the distance and time barrier that has hitherto been a road block to full benefits of the programs being derived by its membership serving in the provinces. The institution’s completely revamped website www.iesl.lk is now the interface for much interaction between the institution and its members irrespective of the geographical divide. Online payments, viewing video recordings of presentations and workshops held in Colombo, live streaming of lectures delivered from overseas, viewingdigital versions of latest newsletter and journal even before it goes to print, archives of older publications to be viewed at leisure, etc are some of
the online services available on the website. The aim of the current presidency of the IESLunder Eng. Tilak De Silva,who is himself an Electronics & Telecommunications Engineer, is for the institution (head office and provincial centres) to be fully connected to its membership in order to derive real time benefits of programs.
Eng.Ajith Nishantha Abeysuriya, BSc (Eng.) Hons (SL), CEng, MIE (SL), was elected as Hon. Chairman at the AGM and will steer the Centre during the new, 2012/2013, session.He has graduated from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, in 1991 with aHonours Degree in BSc. Engineering, specializing in the field of Civil Engineering.He received Charter and was admitted to the class of Member in The Institution of Engineers – Sri Lanka, in June 1998. He served as Secretary, IESL – SabaragamuwaCentre for two years 2010-2011 and 2011-2012.
Eng. A. N. Abeysuriya joined Road Development Authority in 1992 and served in a number of divisions, beginning as a site engineer in
Road Rehabilitation Project WB3 Panadura-Galle, and later in ADB2, Bridge site – Kuruwita. He served in Bridge Designs office, Sethsiripaya, Battaramulla during the period 1996 – 2000, and completed steel bridge designs for two major highway bridges. In year 2000 he was appointed as Executive Engineer- Ratnapura. In 2007 December he was promoted as Chief Engineer- Designs at Ratnapura. He serves in this position up to date, and was selected in 2003, for training in Japan by JICA in the field of Bridge Engineering.

Deputy Chairman, Eng. S. P. Gamage (WB) as Hon. Assistant Secretary andEng. LalithaGunathilaka(CEB) as Hon. Editor. Also elected wereEng. PraneethGanegoda (CEB) as Hon. Committee Member (1), Eng. DilashiniWijesundara(RDA) as Hon. Committee Member (2), Eng. H.K.P.K. Jinadasa ( WB) as Hon. Committee Member (3), Eng. Chandima Ratnayaka (SLT) as Hon. Committee Member (4), Eng. G.Kariyawasam (PC)as Hon. Committee Member (5) andEng. Weerakoon (CECB) as Hon. Committee Member (6).
