‘Hopalu Arana’ hoodwinking a generation
View(s):‘Hopalu Arana’, the newest teleplay which joined Swarnavahini teledrama belt will be telecast at 8.30 pm on every Sunday starting from January 6.
Screenplay written and directed by award winning writer Thushari Abeysekara, the teleplay is centered on a well-to-do, high society family in close proximity to the Galle town which is undergoing rapid cultural change with the advent foreign influences.
Thushari, law and mass communication graduate from University of Colombo has written a number of novel like ‘Sudu Kapuru Pethi’ which won Best Youth Novel at 2003 State Literary Awards and ‘Noniwee Ewulunemi’ which won D. R. Wijewardene award for the Best novel. Many of her novels have been made to teledramas.
Paatali de Seram is the daughter of a British national and a woman from a wealthy family in Galle. Her mother is Sandra. The story comes in the form of a confession by Paatali while layers of past relationships of William Jose and Sandra appear from time to time.
Sandra who goes to the Galle Fort to indulge in her hobby as a painter, meets British tourist William who later falls in love with her. Their domestic aide Maartha who hails from a distant rural village helps Sandra who is also in her age.
After William leaves the country at the end of his tour, it is found that Sandra is pregnant. She ultimately marries a tourist guide called Seram. But later she finds that Seram is a swindler and cheat. Sandra is thoroughly disappointed and in the meantime parents die under mysterious circumstances and all their property is snatched by Seram who marries again. Maartha who later brings up Paatali unfolds the gruelling tales of the past.
The teledrama is stars Roshan Ravindra, Tharuka Wanniarachchi, Uddika Premaratne, Rebecca Nirmalee, Damayanthi Fonseka, Janaka Kumbukage, Lucian Bulathsinhala, Chamila Peiris, Nilmini Buwaneka, Jagath Benaragama and Tissa Bandaranayake in the stellar cast.
