For nearly two weeks, fisherfolk in Trincomalee and Puttalam have been unable to put out to sea due to the unusually bad weather conditions.

They have been forced to drag their boats inland to keep them away from the waves and avoid damage to their vessels.

Namal Priyadharshana, Chairman of a Fishermen’s Association in Trincomalee said that over an extended period of time several hundred families had been adversely affected by the rough seas and strong winds in both areas.

The high price consumers are forced to pay for fish is because fishermen are unable to put out to sea and the resultant drop in the catch in these areas.

At Puttalam fishermen sit idly by their boats waiting for the sea to calm

With the weather worsening, fisherfolk are forced to drag their boats further inland

Conditions are so bad owners of rowing boats have dragged boats almost up to their doorstep

Boats have been turned upside down and drawn as far from the waves as possible
