literally means “sandy village” which refers to the area’s sandy sweep bay. Weligama is a popular tourist destination, famousfor its distinct stilt fishermen and an off shore islet known as Taprobane, where a dream house of the French Count de Mauny was built, company officials told the Business Times.The resort will be on a 12-acre headland location.
There will be 40 keys or rooms with a villa concept while the villas are clusters of 2, 3 and 4 with a large swimming pool per cluster. “This allows a residential feel with butler service via a butler station for each cluster. This is a unique positioning, which will command higher room rates and longer stays, encouraging family groups, which is the trend especially among Asian travellers,” one official explained. MJF subsidiary Forbes & Walker Leisure will manage Weligama. With operational expertise honed at Tea Trails, Weligama will dominate the small luxury resort category, he said.
Due to the unique nature of the site, an experienced Thai resort architect Lek Bunnag was selected. Lek has designed several Ritz Carlton and Four Seasons resorts and we are confident that the Weligama resort will set a benchmark in Sri Lanka when it opens for the Winter 2013 season.
