Avitthawa Nalanda Maha Vidyalaya, situated in the Galle District is under huge development project as it has been picked as one of the secondary schools of the 1000 Schools Project. As the school is located close to the Kalutara District, most of the students attending the school are from villages in the Kalutara District.
Avitthawa Nalanda MV is a Government school located in the Avitthawa Village. The college is situated in a pleasant area, close to Kalutara with natural surroundings.
In 1924 this school initially established as the “Opatha Government Mixed School”. The intention of the school was to teach in the Sinhala medium at a time when the Sinhala language was not given its due place. The founder principal was Mr.d.G.Abeysinghe. At the start school was a small shed with twelve desks and chairs. Under the leadership of several principals the school expanded day by day despite the shortage of buildings and other facilities. However the quality of education was excellent. Gradually the number of students increased and the Ministry of Education took further steps to upgrade the school as a Maha Vidyalaya, providing more facilities and classrooms. As a result of this village school became Avitthawa Nalanda Maha Vidyalaya in 1978 and was upgraded as a 6 to 13 school with Advanced Level, Arts and Commerce streams.
The present administration is headed by Captain Nilantha Gurusinghe. The teaching staff consists of 38 teachers and they are dedicated to educate the children. The school observes the Government educational curriculum in the Sinhalese medium for more than 600 students.
The school is presently experiencing major developments under the 1000 School Project of “Mahinda Chinthanaya”, a project of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and they are bound to acquire several facilities to function as a secondary school. They are fortunate to obtain a well equipped Computer Unit, a Mathematics Unit, a Science Lab, a Media Unit and a lot more is to follow in 2014.
At present, the school is in a leading place as the results of G.C.E.(O/L) and G.C.E(A/L) are excellent whilst comparing to the other schools in the Elpitiya Zone. Annually quite a good amount of students enter the national universities. The teachers devote themselves to encourage the students to bring in the highest achievements possible in public examinations.
Avaitthawa Nalanda MV is an exemplary village school which gives maximum opportunity to students to build their skills though extracurricular activities as well.
The school administration has formed many societies to encourage the students to participate in at least in one extra curricular activity. As a result of this, students have done well in the English Day, Sinhala Day, Mathematics, Sports, Dancing, Music and Drama competitions.
They bagged awards not only in zonal competitions but also in Provincial and All Island competitions. Tharika Kumary bagged third place in the All Island Sinhala Day “Padya Gayana” competition in 2012.
The Girl Scouts and Environmental Corps are the pride of Nalanda MV. They have participated in several activities going by their training schedule.
Added to that annually they organize various programmes to exhibit their talents.
Their mission is “to mould students with knowledge, skills, good attitude and hand over skillful, brave and well balanced personalities to the nation to get over the obstacles and challenges in the future”.
They have already stepped into this path admirably. They need the support of the entire community in association with the school to maintain it and build an ideal school. The history of the college has provided evidence that the college is capable of producing great personalities by which the country can be proud of.
