Mr A. Samaranayake the founder of the school had a huge liking to start a school for village students at the 16th mile post on
the Elpitiya-Mapalagama route. Earlier this was a plain road surrounded by paddy fields. His huge effort came to light in 1899 and this boys’ school “Iskole Godella” was inaugurated during the same year with 83 boys and the first principal was Mr. A. Samaranayake. Today it is a highly developed village school, well known as Kahaduwa Maha Vidyalaya, serving the neighbouring villages as a symbol of hope.
In 1937, thirty eight years after the commencement pf the institution, the school opened the way to village girls and the school was operated under two principals – Mrs. Pathiratne Jayasinghe for girls and Mr. D. S. Samarasinghe for boys. The secondary section of the school was established the same year.
In 1945 the two separate schools joined together and started functioning as a mixed school. Since then, this village school has set a pace in every aspect of success the school had established. 1953 was a fortunate year for the school, which brought them the Advanced Level Commerce Stream to uplift the status of the school. Presently this school has been selected as one of the secondary schools under the 1000 Schools Project and is currently going through a massive development project.
Under the assistance of Mr. A. P. G. Chandrasiri (SLPS-I) , who is the present serving principal of Kahaduwa MV who was appointed in 2007 the number of students has increased to nearly 800 and the academic staff has increased to 42 and six non- academic staff along with the expansion of the education network of the school.
Kahaduwa MV provides many facilities to students. These include a complete playground, well equipped laboratories, a well maintained library with more than 8000 books, a computer unit, a special Art Room, a special education unit and an audio visual unit.
The school has developed swiftly in the educational side and even today a quite a lot of students are selected from Kahaduwa M.V. to the universities and the College of Education. They are proud to say that they annually enjoy nearly 50% success at results in their G.C.E.(O/L) examinations.
The school has a proud history in the field of sports, especially in volleyball and karate. The first all island victory of the college volleyball team came in 1982. The under 15 girls volleyball team bagged the first runners-up spot and in 1987 they captured the All island championship. They are also proud to say that Nadeeka Lakmali, the Asia medalist and Olympics participant in the Javelin throw is one of their old girls. Presently W.P. Duleeka and L.L. Not only in sports but also the students have done well in all extracurricular activities that they have participated in including dancing, music, art and the language day competitions and has gained success in zonal, provincial and all island victories.
“Create a capable, environmental friendly, kindhearted and skillful generation using the resource with cultural inheritances and traditions to face the challenges in future years and reflect the Sri Lanka individuality over to the world” is the mission of the school. They wish to thank the Ministry of Education, Provincial Department of Education, the school Development Society, the parents and well-wishers for providing all facilities.
