Novices Hasitha Anuruddha, Joseph Dilan and H. Prabath advanced to the quarter-final stage of the Men’s Singles in the 45th National Carrom Championship held at the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL) headquarters in Maharagama yesterday.
Anuruddha, Dilan and Prabath will be the first three of eight novices to reach the top 16 which includes eight national ranked players in the Men’s Singles event. Two of the four final round matches were held yesterday and the remaining games will be held today at the same venue in the Men’s Singles event.

Meanwhile the quarter-finalists of the Women’s Singles event were disclosed by the CFSL officials yesterday. According to the official line up, the quarter-final round of the Women’s Single will be held on January 26. Consequently the matches will be of Joseph Roshita vs Sashika Sandamali, Upeksha Shyamalie vs Yashika Rahubadda, Chalani Lakmali vs Joseph Dilka and Rebecca Darleen vs Madushika Kanchanamala.

Last weekend Mohamed Sherriffdeen and M.T.M. Hilmy clinched the Men’s Double title after beating pairing of national and world singles champion Nishantha Fernando and Lahiru Eshan 11/25, 25/0 and 25/12 in the final.

Roshita Joseph and Madushika Kanchanamala won the Women’s Double championship after recording a well earned win by 25/24 and 25/14 against Chalani Lakmali and Arosha Wickremasinghe. The Mixed Doubles title was won by Dimal Senaratne and Chalani Lakmali who went on to beat Lahiru Eshan and Joseph Roshita by 25/23 and 25/24 in a well contested final. Kaviranga Perera emerged as the Veteran’s Singles champion when he beat Merrill Nanayakkara in a final that stretched to three sets 25/12, 11/25 and 25/20. After the fourth weekend’s play, the tournament will come to an end on January 27 followed by the awards ceremony.
