With a suggestion coming from the cricket hierarchy that they contemplate forming three different formats of the game team wise, the argument of whether there should be a separate captain and unit for Tests, ODIs and T20s is now especially relevant.
The Sunday Times asked the public their thoughts on the matter.
There should be a different captain for T20s and the same captain for both 50 over and Test cricket. However, the entire team should be different for the three different formats. - Nalin Premaratne (Sales manager)
Test and Limited Over cricket are different therefore there should be one captain and team for ODIs and T20s and another captain and team for Test matches. We need more young players for Twenty20 matches while more experienced and stylish players should be put in for Test matches. This will also give more opportunities to upcoming players. - Asoka Chandrasekera (Employee at Sri Lanka Cricket)
A good captain can lead all teams but when it comes to players they can change and the authorities should choose players according to their talents and styles. For T20s and One Day matches allrounders are a good choice and for Test matches players with talent in a particular area should play. - K. G. Kamalsiri (groundsman)
If a captain is good enough he should play in all three formats, unless of course he is playing excess cricket and gets jaded. Whether the same players should play in all formats is something the selectors should look at. Certain players should because they have the ability to adjust their games. - Maurice De la Zilva (Umpire)
All matches should be played by one team under one captain. The Cricket Board will have to bear a big cost with three squads, and an experienced captain can lead a team in a Test as well as in a 50 over and Twenty20 match. - Namila Iruwiman (School cricketer)
If there is an experienced captain, he can lead all the teams. But the players should be changed according to their skills. - Niluka Akmeemana (Private sector employee)
The strengths for these three games are different therefore the teams and captains should change. In Australia, there is a separate team for T20s and another team for One-Dayers and Test matches. We should also follow that system. - W.D. Nimal (Sportsman)
It depends on what the captain wants. Australia has separate teams for T20s, ODIs and Tests. If the captain feels he is strong in Tests, he should go ahead and play in the Test team. During the last couple of series, Sri Lanka did not fare well in Tests but have done well in One Day cricket and T20s. There are different strategies and approaches. It is important to create expert units. - Suminda Weerasinghe (Financial Analyst)
We need youngsters to play T20s and more experienced players for Test matches and 50 over games. The captain should also be changed accordingly. A young and talented captain can lead a young team in T20s and can maximize their strength. - Prasanna Priyanka (Assistant Coach)
The teams can vary according to players’ aptitude but the captain can remain unchanged for all teams. - Vajira Perera (Administrator)
