Hapugala Maha Vidyalaya (Navodya School) is a rapidly developing Buddhist Mixed School, situated in a small village, Hapugala, adjoining the Engineering Faculty of the University of Ruhunu. The school is well-planned and maintained according to the 5S productivity concept.
College Environment
Hapugala MV began its existence on January 2, 1902. Palasinghe of Galle, Wataraka was its first principal. Mudhaliyar A.G. Jayasundara was the founder who started the school with a staff of four and 20 pupils. The school, which originally bore the name ‘Rajaabhisheka Buddhist Mixed School,’ was later renamed ‘Hapugala Maha Vidyalaya. The first college library was opened in 1952.
The college today provides education from grade 1 to grade 13, offers physical and bio sciences, commerce and art stream for A/L students of Grades 13 and 12 and is regarded as one of the leading schools in the Galle Zone. More than 1,250 students, with the help of an excellent academic staff; pursue their classroom studies, and co-curricular activities. The present principal, Vipul Milinda Pandikorala, is a great catalyst of the college’s present achievement.
College Dancing Group
Today Hapugala MV is fully equipped with an Audio Visual Unit, Media Unit, Library, Science Laboratory, IT Unit, Home Science Unit, First Aid unit, Swimming unit and English Opportunity Educational Programme Unit.
This computer lab was donated by the Ministry of Education under the Secondary Education Modernization Project (SEMP) and was initiated on uly 28, 2006. The lab is networked with 20 computers and has been provided with internet facility too.
The hardware solution teams have been formed by the Ministry of Education with the purpose of repairing and maintaining the computers at school level. The team consists of six students and two teachers.
Traffic Unit
The school has earned its reputation in the areas of academic excellence as well as in sports. The primary section is one of their most successful units which bring high achievements in their Grade 5 Scholarship Examinations. The 2012 results brought nine passes while W.K. Piyumini Jayoda obtaining the zonal first rank (District 4th). The G.C.E. (O/L) results presently bring over 60% of success. The Advanced Level classes started in 1963 and the science stream was introduced in 2001.
The First Aid Unit
An array of clubs and societies function with the point of finding, fine-tuning, establishing and spreading talent. The cub scouts, scouts and girl scouts carry forward the ways of Lord Baden Powell. The Buddhist Society, the Science Society, the Commerce Society, the Astronomical Society, First Aid Unit, the Western School Bands and the Sinhala and English Literary Club have all stuck to their respective schedules.
The extracurricular activities take a prominent place in Hapugala MV which helps them meet their mission easily. Subjects like Dancing, Eastern and Western music also play a crucial role in their school to uphold their name. The college dancing
Western Band
troupe, music groups, language units carry fame to the college not only in the provincial competitions but also at the all island competitions. The ‘Naiyadi Wannama’ dancing troupe emerged first place in the All Island School Dancing and Drama competition.
The Mathematics team bagged the zonal first place in the Mathematics Competition.
With the vision of “Creating a standard school environment for all those concerned for the upliftment of both human and physical resources within the academic sphere” Hapugala Maha Vidyalaya march forward in the mission of “managing their resources to produce cultured citizens for achieving future challenges in the world”. No doubt, in the future Hapugala MV will be the beacon of the village.
