Guiding Light
View(s):The International Day of the Girl Child was designated as October 11 by a resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 2011, to recognize girls’ rights and highlight the unique challenges girls face worldwide.
Therefore a workshop was held on October 11, 2012 at P. D. S. Kularatne Vidyalaya, Ambalangoda with the
participation of 45 Girl Guides from four schools in the District to commemorate the first International Day of the Girl Child.
The Disaster Management Committee of the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association played an integral part in helping those in need when the country was affected by the tsunami in the year 2004.
It continues to carry out activities to help enhance the quality of life of children and adults in those areas and has even launched what is called the 3L (Life Long Learning) Project which is being sponsored by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts targeted to empower young women through education and training.
When heavy rainfall resulted in many areas of the country being flooded, a flood relief campaign was held on November 10, 2012 in the Mattakkuliya area where 180 packs of dry rations were distributed by the Disaster Management Committee.
As the year began with many natural disasters, we Guides should be able to see the world through a new eye. The Girl Guides should help others and be kind to the destitute and the needy and also be sensitive to the needs of those around us and not only think of ourselves. Religion plays a vital part in our day to day activities paving the way for unity and success in every sphere of our lives.
We as Guides must stand by our Promise to do our best to our Religion and the Country respecting all other Religions and Races too. Let us think about others and make this world a better place by helping each other, and as The Girl Guides of this Country, let us be aware of changes of nature and educate others to face such disasters and calamities rendering help where ever needed.
