Raising voices for a cause
View(s):Organised in aid of urgent renovations at the Maharagama Cancer Hospital celebrity-endorsed charity concert ‘Ignite’ will see Sri Lanka’s top young talent perform
Ccricketing legend Mahela Jayawardena is the event ambassador for ‘Ignite’, a fundraising concert in aid of urgent renovations at the Maharagama Cancer Hospital. The concert, a fusion of TNL Onstage greats and seasoned local performers will perform on February 2, at Police Park, Havelock Road.
The show will bring together three things Sri Lankans love in good measure- celebrities, fantastic music and a great cause. Mahela is joined in his endorsement by Sri Lankan YouTuber JehanR.
Some of Sri Lanka’s top young musicians including CC (Onstage Solo Category Winner 2007), Asela Perera, Melissa Pereira (Onstage Solo Category Winner 2012), Magicians Toolbox (Onstage Band Category Winner 2012), the Castaways, Roadkill (Onstage Band Category Winner 2011), Maria, Gayan, S.E.X, Circus Cult, Angel Down and the Old Royalists Choir. The concert will be followed by an after party with EDM City DJ’s Nige, Deenology and Dash.
The event is organised by the One World Volunteers, Livewire Productions and the Major General Aruna Jayatilake Cancer Foundation. Reihan Stephen of the Castaways and Co Chairman of Ignite said, “It has been an amazing experience working with the One World Volunteers along with Ryan from Roadkill and Purindu from the Maj. Gen. Aruna Jayatilake Cancer oundation…they have been incredibly supportive throughout the process and I am very grateful to have them on board to make this a reality.”
Formed in 2011 as part of a community service initiative for Sri Lanka Model United Nations, the One World Volunteers has come a long way from a small group of committed young volunteers. Today, the group has almost 600 young change makers onboard, all committed to making a difference in their communities with love, hope and faith.
Livewire Productions is a partnership between two dynamic front men from leading bands in Colombo-one of which won a TNL Onstage previously. In a refreshing turn of events they’ve decided to slip back from the stage and go behind the scenes for a good cause. The Major General Aruna Jayatilaka Cancer Foundation was set up in memory and honour of its namesake, a highly respected military personnel in the country, by his son Purindu Jayatilaka and seeks to raise awareness about cancer and assist those suffering from the condition-be it financial or emotional support.
Chrisantha ‘CC’ De Silva, who is performing solo for the first time in almost five years, said, “I’m pretty excited about being back on stage solo after a while! It’s a great cause.” Good friend and co-founder of the Melomanic Sessions Asela Perera will also perform at the concert, adding “This is what music is all about – using the talent we have to make a difference in people’s lives.”
Ignite will be held on February 2 at Police Park Grounds. Tickets are priced at Rs.500 and can be obtained from the organising committee.
