With the conclusion of its 45th National Championship, which produced many astonishing results, the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL) will continue its agenda for this year with two more competitions.

They will hold the 12th Junior National Championship and the 14th Grand Slam Championship, both ranking tournaments. The respective tournaments will begin on February 16 and 23 “We have made plans to commence the 12th Junior National Championship from February 16 with play continuing over a few weekends. The final plan as to the duration of the tournament and its structure will be known only after the draw, which will be held on February 4,” Rohini Mathiasz, the Secretary of the CFSL said.

The tournament committee of the CFSL has finalised a long weekend which begins on February 23 as the ideal period to conduct the 14th Grand Slam Championship, which is conducted among the top rankers in both the men’s and women’s categories.

“Matches of the Grand Slam Championship will be played from 9.00am onwards on each day with 16 top-ranked men and women slicers in action. This is a keenly-contested tournament as points gained from this competition will add to their rankings, sometimes causing changes in rankings,” she added.

Mathiasz also revealed that the Junior National Championship will face a week’s interruption during the weekend of the Grand Slam Championship.

“The Junior Nationals, which will be stopped after the first weekend to accommodate the Grand Slam Championship, will resume from March 2.The ranking players need more competition to maintain their form which will be helpful for international assignments. They will have tournaments on a monthly basis locally, so it is important to maintain a healthy distance between these competitions, and that was the reason to break up the Junior Nationals into two phases,” she further said. – NA
