Sandesh and Hansani shine at Colombo TT championship
View(s):Sandesh Nissanka of Ananda College and Hansani Piyumala of Anula Vidyalaya emerged as top performers at the Colombo District Table Tennis Championship 2013. The tournament was conducted last Saturday (26) at the Lalith Athulathmudali College Indoor Stadium in Mt. Lavinia.
Nissanka and Piyumala were adjudged the Most Outstanding Players in the boys and girls segments respectively following their strong performances in two of the main events at the competition. Piyumala in particular won the Women’s Singles after clinching the Under-15 Girls’ Singles, as she became the cynosure of the competition. She beat Vinodya de Silva of Royal Institute, Nugegoda in straight sets after recording an easy win against Chamathsara Fernando of Girls High School Mt. Lavinia, also in straight sets.
Anandian Nissanka qualified to enter three finals but was able to clinch only the Under-18 Boys Singles. In that battle he took sweet revenge over Virunaka Hendaheva of Royal College Colombo by two sets to one while emerging runner-up in the Men’s Singles and Under-15 Boys Singles. In the Men’s Singles Nissanka lost to Dr. G N Lucas of the Veterans TT Association, who won the battle by two sets to one while in the Under-15 Boys final, his Under-18 Boys final opponent Virunaka Hendaheva of Royal Colombo won the battle in two sets.
The Under-18 Girls’ Singles was won by Dewmini Weerasena of Musaeus College, who went on to hand Chamathsara Fernando of Girls High School Mt. Lavinia her second defeat. Weerasena won the battle by two sets to one. In the Under-12 age category, Dewmith Weerasena of Lyceum International Nugegoda beat Thisas Ranchagoda of Royal College Colombo to win the boys’ category as Senuri Perera of Anula Vidyalaya clinched the girls’ category beating Nilani Herath of Girls High School Mt. Lavinia.
Royalists Ranchagoda, before losing his battle in the Under-12 Boys final, beat Chanupa Gunasena of Ananda College to clinch the Under-10 Boys Singles while its Girls’ Singles event was won by Ayla Chitty of Ladies College who beat Ushiri Perera of Girls High School, Mt. Lavinia. Hasali Buddhadasa of Visakha Vidyalaya beat Selini Herath of Girls High School, Mt. Lavinia to win the Under-8 Girls Singles while Senura Silva of Isipathana beat Thumal Adikary of Royal College to win the Boys’ Singles title of that age group. – NA
