Do you want to be an important part of the healthcare team that is involved in all aspects of healthcare in the community? Do you want to play an important role in educating the public about medicine and health? If this is what you want to be, consider studying your medical degree at the International Medical University (IMU), Malaysia’s first established private medical and healthcare university with over 21 years of dedicated focus in healthcare education.

At this university, you will have the opportunity to study in a university, which, to date, has the highest number of faculty members, registered students and successful graduates of any other private medical schools in Malaysia.

You will have the option to complete the entire degree locally in IMU or study the first part of the degree in IMU and transfer to one of the 26 partner universities in Australia, UK, Ireland, Canada or USA for completion of the medical programme.
These international partnerships mean that the IMU curriculum has been developed to meet these universities’ high international standards.

As a medical student in IMU, you will get clinical exposure as early as Semester 1. The aim of the clinical exposure is to ensure that students gain sufficient skills before transferring to the clinical course provided by the IMU Clinical School or the Partner Medical Schools (PMS).

If you complete the entire degree locally in IMU, you will undergo an intensive six-month Senior Clerkship at Hospital Batu Pahat in Semester 10. During this semester, students work in wards as junior house officers under the supervision of senior clinicians, in order to prepare them for their house officer posting.

This is important for the students as they will be provided the opportunity of incremental responsibility for independent patient management. The early clinical exposure and intensive Senior Clerkship will better prepare you for patient care and housemanship training. This will then enable you to become better doctors.

Joanne Pereira, another fourth year medical student, said, “The clinical phase of IMU’s MBBS programme focuses more on clinical training enabling first-hand experiences accompanied with problem solving discussions and task-based learning.
During this clinical training, students are expected to familiarise themselves with the local hospital settings in preparation for them to function as a competent houseman.

In my opinion, IMU’s emphasis on proper clinical training has not only improved my communication skills and competency but has also taught me the importance of the application of basic medical knowledge in order to treat patients holistically.”
Studying the medical programme at IMU uniquely provides an opportunity for you to integrate with students from the medical and other health sciences programmes.

This allows for inter-professional learning, and close friendships to form, and sets the foundation for future working relationships which may lead to effective business networking after graduation.“The medical programme at IMU enables students to not only learn the important art of Medicine but to also be educated on being a member of society that looks beyond the illness and treats the person. The programme is structured to provide students with a well-rounded experience. Students, will undoubtedly be leaders of tomorrow and as such, I am fortunate to be given the opportunity to be a part of it.” said Abdol Reza Borzou, a second year medical student.

IMU is currently recognised by the Sri Lankan Medical Council. To date, the University offers a range of undergraduate programmes in medical and health sciences: Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Nursing, Nursing Science, Nutrition & Dietetics, Nutrition, Psychology, Biomedical Science, Medical Biotechnology, Chiropractic, Chinese Medicine as well as postgraduate degrees: MSc an PhD in Medical and Health Sciences (by research), MSc in Public Health, MSc in Analytical and Pharmaceutical Chemistry and MSc in Molecular Medicine.
