The Sri Lankan women’s cricket team is currently proving itself to be a dark horse at the ongoing Women’s Cricket World Cup in India, at which they demolished two tournament favourites in England and India. Does this performance merit greater prominence and support for the women’s game in the country? We let the public decide.

As usual women do not get a proper place in the sport but seriously the Sri Lanka Cricket Board should think up more ways of how to support these women.- Charminster Pereira (Former national tennis player)

For some time they were struggling at the international level, but now that they have done well and proved they are capable of big things. I think it is up to the cricket administrators to support them. - Dilroy Fernando (Veteran Rugby administrator and referee)

Our team is a lot better than it was before but it still needs to be improved. Beating the English and the Indian teams was really a big achievement. - Janith Wijekoon (Student)

Most of the players on the national team are from the forces, which mean that girls are not motivated to play cricket at the school and club levels. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board should get expert views and do their best to promote the sport among women. - K.G. Premachandra (Parent)

There should be more interest generated for women's cricket. There are some girls who are very talented but there are restrictions at their homes and a belief that there is no future for women in the field of cricket. Kavinda Gamage (Master-in-Charge of Cricket)

Women's cricket does not get enough exposure. A lot of people would not go to watch a women's world cup even if it's played in the country. This is unfortunate and we should not think that it won't be as entertaining as when guys are playing. Melissa Jayawardena (Student)

Nobody thought our women would come so far; our national team could go ahead winning more matches. Schools and clubs are the best places to promote the sport. - Rukmal Palpola (Private sector employee)

When we see the matches it is evident that the girls on our national team are very good at the game and there is even a possibility of them winning the World Cup. These matches should be broadcast and given more publicity. There is still a low percentage of girls choosing cricket as a sport. - Sandun Silva (Student)

I watched the matches against England and India. I did not know that our girls were that talented. This is due to a lack of publicity and coverage for women's cricket. At present cricket is only taught in boys' schools and for boys in mixed schools. We should get rid of the idea that a cricket world cup can be won only by a group of men. - Supun Peiris (Private sector employee)

The national team's performance shows that our girls can play good cricket. We don't see our girls being properly trained to play cricket, football and rugby. This should be changed. I would not mind if my daughter excels in cricket, it should not only be a man's game. - Wasantha Perera (Parent)
