34th Bata-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2013

Thurstan College cricketer Minhaj Jaleel, who is performing creditably in the ongoing first XI cricket season further consolidated his top position at the end of fourth week at the 34th Bata-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2013 competition. Jaleel’s lead further bloomed as he managed to gain a healthy tally of 3717 votes over his closest rival, A.K. Tyron of Richmond College Galle. By the fourth week Jaleel’s total exceeded the landmark figure of 7000 votes as he seems to be unconquerable with many weeks ahead.

Interestingly, Jaleel received the highest number of votes during the concluded week, which was 1634, while St. Peter’s College skipper Dushan Hemantha was the second best gainer for the ended week with 156 votes. Other competitors have made relatively insignificantly gains from previous weeks and all contenders remain unchanged in their respective slots. Hemantha remains at the third slot followed by Dinuka Wickramanayake of Trinity College and Madawa Nimesh of Royal Panadura in the top five.

Sanju Sharuk of Vidyaloka Kelaniya, who made a sudden impact in the Emerging category by toppling Deshan Dhananjaya, added further spark to his campaign by retaining the top spot for a second week, with a healthy lead. He added 179 votes this week and is well ahead of Lahiru Vimukthi of Sri Sumangala Panadura by a margin of 177 votes. Dhananjaya, who led this category for two weeks slid down to third place last week and still remains in the same slot as he is closely challenged by Prasanna Sujith of Uhana MV and Bhanuka Manelanga of St. Mary’s Kegalle, who are just a few votes away from changing their places.

Walid Jiffry of Leighton Park still leads the International Schools category as his tally passed the 2000 mark but his lone run has finally come to an end. Sasitha Rathnathilake of Lyceum Nugegoda entered the race with a mere tally of 75 votes but in weeks to come the competition surely can change its context.
