The Australian Government in a bid to assist Sri Lanka achieve the ‘Knowledge Hub’ status is granting Australian dollars 34 million which in turn would help four million Sri Lankan students to further their studies.

This was stated by Ms Robyn Mudie, Australian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka as Chief Guest at the launching of ‘Adyapana 2013’ Higher education and Career Exhibition held in Colombo last week. The exhibition will be held in Colombo, Jaffna and Batticoloa and is organised by Lanka Exhibition and Conference Services (Pvt) Ltd (LECS).

In Colombo it will be held at the BMICH from 4 to 6 October, in Batticaloa from 11 to 13 October and in Jaffna it will be held in early January 2014.

Ms Mudie said that quality education is vitally important to the growth of the economy of the country, to have a good workforce and its social benefits would contribute a healthy family. She said that the Australian government has been helping Sri Lanka since many years to develop primary and secondary education in this country.

On the sidelines of the launch, Ms Mudie told the Business Times (BT) that the Australian grant would be spread over a period of four years. Australia has been supporting the cause of education in Sri Lanka since 1950s, she said adding that in addition to this grant Australia is also providing 1,000 scholarships for Sri Lankan students to study in Australia.

Sudesh Lenadora, Project Manager, Adyapana said that this would be the most focused higher education and career exhibition and they are holding it for the 8th consecutive year.

He said that it has been a central platform for the students to find out the avenues to pursue their education. Despite the high level of competition and options available in the field of education, he said many students have continuously patronized this exhibition and have thereafter successfully pursued their higher studies.
