About me
I always wanted to become a psychologist and help others. While all my friends wanted to be medical doctors or scientists I wanted to work with and help people through Psychology. Even though I did my A/Levels in Science stream and my degree was in psychology, I got involved in many other areas during my school and university life. I was the president of the ANC Business club, Committee member of the Rotaract club of ANC and was actively involved in many student activities. I joined United Nations Volunteers early this year as an intern. I want to do a post-graduate qualification in Psychology.
My career
I had a passion for communication and people from young days. Even during my school years I got involved with various extracurricular activities. This even continued during my university life as well. I worked at a popular FM radio station as a news presenter for almost one year. I was privileged to get selected to a community service project in India for 2 consecutive years representing Sri Lanka. Now I’m working at UN as a voluntary staff member thanks to my education. The exposure that I obtained from all these was immense and I thank my parents and university faculty and staff for the encouragement given in every step.
Why Psychology?
I recommend Psychology as an education and career choice for anybody who loves to work with people. Psychology education helped me to understand myself and others better. I think psychology is one of the best degrees for a student after A/Level in Sri Lanka. My degree gave me a world of knowledge about essential subject areas in Psychology like clinical, counseling, child, adolescent, abnormal, family, industrial and organizational etc. I think it’s very important to have a broad understanding of all these areas of psychology at undergraduate level. I got the opportunity of doing an elective appointment at the Colombo South Teaching Hospital in Kalubowila. I really valued this opportunity to get career experience while studying in my university final year. It’s important that the university degree is UGC (University Grants Commission) recognized to get this opportunity in Sri Lankan Public healthcare system.
My university
I graduated from Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T), USA. Missouri S&T is a leading US state university consistently ranked among the top 10 in the USA. I would like to thank all my professors and advisors for the guidance given during my studies. I managed to complete my Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Psychology a full –time four (04) year degree at ANC Education – Colombo. I think that the training I received at ANC Education – Missouri S&T degree programme will surely help me with my future plans.
