View(s):By Hansani Bandara
The Bodu Bala Sena Organisation (BBSO) on Friday expressed dissatisfaction over remarks made by UNP MP Mangala Samaraweera equating BBSO to a ‘Taliban’ terrorist organisation. BBSO Secretary, Ven. Galaboda Aththe Gnanasara Thera told a press conference that it was not their organisation that spread extremist ideas in this country, but certain Muslim organisations which spread such ideas by creating divisions among society.
“We do not recommend violence or disrespect to other religions, and have never conducted any poster campaigns against Muslims” Ven. Gnanasara added.
Denying allegations made by MP Samaraweera, Ven. Gnanasara said the money used by BBSO is not funds from any State or foreign organisation, but the unity and strength of the Buddhists in the country.
Challenging MP Samaraweera to prove the allegations he made, the Ven Thera said that the BBSO is ready to dissolve the organisation and halt its activities, if the accusations were proved. He called on the UNP and MP Samaraweera to publicly apologise to the Buddhists in the country, for the accusations made.
On Wednesday, Mr. Samaraweera accused BBSO of being funded by the ‘secret account’ of the Ministry of Defence, and thriving to spread hatred and create communal conflicts within the country.
He made the statement at a press conference held on Thursday (14) to condemn the activities of the BBSO.
“This is a representation of ‘Taliban’ terrorism’ said MP Samaraweera, adding, they are spreading extremism.
He said the BBSO spent millions to conduct poster campaigns and websites that spread communal hatred against Muslims.
He added that, this could lead to another ethnic conflict, and appreciated the effort made by the Muslim community to tolerate these extremist acts.
Mr. Samaraweera said that the campaign carried out by the BBSO could harm Sri Lankans who are living in other countries, as there could be adverse reactions against them.
