Hameed Al Husseinie wound down their sixth Group of ’80s All Island Inter School Invitation Football Tournament (AIISFT) in exquisite style, as the hosts edged out Lumbini College, Colombo 2-2 (3-0 penalties) in a heart-stopping clash, which went right down to the wire at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

During the crucial penalty shootout, Lumbini’s players were unable to maintain their composure, perhaps due to the overwhelming pressure generated by a very large and vocal group of Hameed Al Husseinie supporters, and missed every one of their kicks from the spot.

Hameed Al Husseinie on the other hand were right on the money with their execution, whacking in all their attempts to launch wild celebrations in the stands.

During regulation time, an enthralling contest between two evenly-matched and highly-skilled teams saw M.S.M Murshid open scoring for Hameed Al Husseinie with a goal in the 27th minute, before Lumbini’s Sarath Kumara equalized four minutes later to make it 1-1 at the half.

A few minutes into the second segment of play, Hameed Al Husseinie struck what could have been a deathblow through M.A.M Azard, who bamboozled Lumbini’s goalie with a beautiful looping strike into the goal’s top corner.

However, Lumbini were not in the finals for no reason, and demonstrated inextinguishable tenacity in clawing the game back by leveling things through Malith Thushara in the 57th minute, to send proceedings into the decisive penalty shootout.

In the match for third place, Hindu College Bamabalapitiya overcame St. Benedict’s College 2-0 with Thiyagaraja Abishek (21 minute) and N. Dharshan (53 minute) scoring.

The Best Goalkeeper of the tournament was Ashik Mohammed of Hameed Al Husseinie. The tournament’s Most Valuable Player was N.C.M Rahuman, another player from Hameed Al Hussseinie, who also secured the award for Highest Goal-Scorer, netting in nine goals. They completed their sweep of the prizes with a third trophy for The Most Popular School Football Player, which went to M. Murshid. D.S.
