Foundation of Goodness (FoG) is not just another Non Government Organization with a few charitable services to speak of but a Community Development Organization which provides a range of services and activities across 30 empowerment sectors for the benefit of 30,000+ people per year from 50+ villages in the South. This project is called the Seenigama Holistic Development Model.
Seenigama is located on the Southern coast of Sri Lanka, 20km North of Galle and is home to approximately 350 families and 2000 people.
Presently FoG is the heart of Seenigama, involved in the major day-to-day activities of the Seenigama villagers. Founded by Mr. Kushil Gunasekera in 1999 today the FoG has been joined by an enthusiastic Board of Trustees and a committed team based in Seenigama and Colombo, all of whom join hands with donors to strengthen the lives of rural communities in Sri Lanka.
At the beginning, during the period of 1999 to 2004, Mr. Kushil Gunasekera along with FoG provided essential services to his ancestral village of Seenigama such as English and IT teaching, maternity clinic, sports activity services, school supplies and scholarships and upgrading the village infrastructures.
When Seenigama suffered massive losses during the tsunami cataclysm in 2004, Mr. Kushil Gunasekera and the FoG rendered a great service to the community by functioning as a base of relief-coordination. Kushil donated his ancestral property to FoG and it became the center for rebuilding and development. Then onwards donors queued to FoG with their donations for the invaluable services and then, with sponsorship from the Marylebone Cricket Club they developed the MCC Centre of Excellence, which is now the heart of the Foundation of Goodness’ work.
Presently the FoG is built on the compassion of people from around the world. The Foundation of Goodness is managed by Founder/Trustee Kushil Gunasekera along with a Board of Trustees which includes Muttiah Muralitharan, Chaminda Vaas, Rohan Iriyagolle, Ashan Malalasekara, Kumar Sangakkara, Pradeep Karunagaran and Mahela Jayawardena. The Trustees contribute in various ways to strengthen the organization, and direct them towards various activities.
As a result of its post Tsunami operations, the FoG began to receive many generous donations from all over the world and they developed their long term sustainable model which has been recognized as the best post-Tsunami project from all countries affected, by the R.M.I.T. University, Melbourne, Australia. They believe that it is suitable for implementation world-wide in order to tackle poverty in developing countries.
Through this model the FoG provides a range of services completely free of charge. For the co-ordination of their major operations, the Foundation of Goodness, in partnership with the renowned Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), has developed a Centre of Excellence in Seenigama, namely ‘The MCC Centre of Excellence’ on the grounds of Founder Kushil Gunasekera’s ancestral villa in Seenigama, which now serves as the central hub of development.
The Staff at FoG are committed to their work in developing the rural communities of Sri Lanka. Their unique approach has built a strong relationship with the community. Presently the FoG sectors have spread their services to rural poor communities beyond the village of Seenigama, on a smaller scale, to nearby villages of Udumulla and Rathgama are extended beyond the village. Details of the above sectors and their success will be published in the upcoming weeks.
