Sudeera’s achievements at Advanced Levels an inspiration for all
View(s):Sudeera Prasadini Ratnayake, a student of Holy Family Balika in Wennappuwa, sat for her Advanced Level examinations last year along with thousands of other students. Last week, with the announcement of the results, Sudheera achieved top grades – 3 A’s. The best news, however, was yet to come. Sudheera was also ranked first place in the district and third in the island overall.
Speaking to Sudheera about her secrets of success she said “I went to school every single day, I did not miss even a single day of school. I revised daily and I made my own short notes. Everything that was taught in school, I wrote down. I realised that that was the best way for me to remember the lessons”.
This was her second attempt at the Advanced Level examinations; the first time she achieved 2As and 1B grade and an island rank of 92. However, Sudheera – who took
the subjects Sinhala, Political Science and Economics, for her advanced level examinations – had a firm target in mind. She wanted to gain entrance to the law faculty. Since she knew her first round of results will not guarantee a place in the law college, she opted to repeat the Advanced Level examination. “since this was my second time I chose my own learning style. My mother is a political science teacher, so she helped me a lot”. Sudheera also has a keen interest for poetry, essays as well as singing. What were the challenges she faced in repeating the advanced levels? “a lot of people around me said that I already have good results, so why should I waste my time repeating the exam. But my parents and sister were very supportive and helped me to achieve my goal and now they too are very happy”.
So what advice would she give the next batch of Advanced Level students? “by now you should start doing the revision of each subject. Also do not be afraid and burdened with worries about the exam, just relax and study hard with focus. Keep doing lots of past papers, I even asked my teachers for additional questions for practice. I went for tuition only for the revision classes since I was repeating the exam, but otherwise tuition is not a necessity. I always spoke to my teachers and got additional help when it was needed” said a confident Sudheera.
Sudheera went on to advise students that they should never give up on their dreams, determination and courage will help them to achieve their goals. We wish Sudheera allthe best!
