Parents of students in the Puttalam district have united to overcome a fresh obstacle put forward by the Education authorities which would have affected the schooling of hundreds of children. Less numbers in schools is forcing the Ministry of Education to close them down. The move has forced students in remote areas to travel as much as 10 to 15 kilometres to study in a school that has the correct numbers.
Parents in Maha Usawewa have collected resources to establish and run their own school. The children of the primary section of Rathanapala Vidyalaya, Maha Uswewa, which was to be closed down, can now be accommodated in a school closer to their homes.
The school was built on three acres of land, donated by the Chief Incumbent of Mahindaramaya Temple in Maha Usawewa, Ven. Galkulame Sri Silananda Thero. School Principal G. M. Chaminda Illangakoon, said that the efforts of the parents should be appreciated and they should be taken as an example of the measures needed to uplift education in this country.
