‘Vision’ an exhibition of paintings by J.C.Rathnayaka is on at the Paradise Road Galleries from February 22. J.C., one of local art’s brightest young prodigies began his career with street art, initiating what has now become a hotspot for university graduates in front of the Viharamahadevi Park. The 35-year-old hails from Polonnaruwa, where he learnt to love striking landscapes and stark colours. Interestingly enough, he studied for a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking at the University of Visual and Performing Arts.
Since his discovery by the local and international art community, he has exhibited at many locations, including the JDA Perera Gallery, the National Art Gallery, the Lionel Wendt, Alliance Francaise Gallery and at the Mona Bismarck Foundation in Paris, France.
He has been awarded at the State Art and Sculpture Festival and been honoured at the Young Contemporaries Visual Art Exhibition. J.C.’s works are included in the Paradise Road Collection Sri Lanka, Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka, Thomas Munk Private Collection Denmark, and in private collections in countries including England, France, Germany, Canada, India, Singapore and Australia.
JC’s first solo and second solo exhibitions were also with the Paradise Road Galleries. The first, titled ‘Dagaba’ was in 2008 while the second, ‘Reflection’ was in 2011. This third exhibition is titled ‘Vision’ to signify the importance of the human link with nature. “We’ve become far too mechanized,” he explains. “We need to get closer to nature and that’s what this exhibition is about.”
JC Rathnayaka’s ‘Vision’ will be on at the Paradise Road Galleries from February 22 until March 14. Gallery hours are from 10am-10pm.
