The 14th Grand Slam Carrom Championship 2013 conducted for national ranked players began yesterday at the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka headquarter in Maharagama with top seed players recording wins. Among the top winners were reigning national champion Chamil Cooray and former national, reigning world champion and defending title holder Nishantha Fernando who won all their matches.
The first round of the championship was conducted yesterday with three games each slotted for each player in the men’s and women’s segments. Cooray and Fernando won all three matches while from the women Yashika Rahubadda and Madushika Kanchanamala too remained unbeaten after three games.
Among others who showed progress were Dimal Senaratne, Tharanga Kelum, Bringley Wickremasinghe, Mohamed Sheriffdeen, Manuka Ashen, Ajith Chandrasoma and Viraj Fernando who won two games each out of three. Pramod Mendis and Charith Madushanka won a game each while M.S.M. Fazil, Udesh Chandima and M.T.M. Hilmy remained winless after the first round.
Besides unbeaten Rahubadda and Kanchanamala, current national champion Chalani Lakmali, Joseph Dilka, Anusha Wickremasinghe and Sashika Sandamali won two games each from three. Reigning champion Joseph Roshita, Anusha Lakmali, Neranji Ayomala and Madhuka Dilshani were able to win a game each and lost two. Shalini Senadheera, Udeshika Kumari, Rebecca Darleen and Sandini Nirasha are yet to record a win.
The Grand Slam Championship worked off among 16 top ranked men slicers and 14 top seed women’s players will reach its second round today with all players set to play three more games each before it reaches the quarterfinal stage tomorrow. – NA
