200% to 500% hike in vehicle registration fee

The registration fee for several categories of motor vehicles has risen by 200%, following a government revision of tariffs last month.  Registration fee for cars up to 1,600 engine capacity (CC) and dual purpose vehicles is now Rs 15,000, from Rs. 5,000; for special purpose vehicles it’s Rs 20,000 from Rs 10,000; for lorry trailers it’s Rs 7,000 from Rs 2,500; and for tractor trailer/bowsers it’s Rs 6,000 from Rs 1,000 (a 500% increase).

Registration fee for motorcycles is Rs 2,000 from Rs. 1,500; for motor tricycles it’s Rs 2,500 from Rs 2,000; for motor lorry prime movers it’s Rs 15,000 from Rs 10,000.
No change for lorries and coaches, which remain at Rs 3,000; and for ambulances and hearses which remain at Rs 10,000.

New categories have been created, while other categories have been amalgamated into one. For instance, registration fee for cars exceeding 1,000 CC is Rs 20,000.
