Uncovered manholes and electricity posts in Colombo and suburban areas have turned into virtual death traps and has led to a number of accidents with some leading to unfortunate deaths. Some of these death traps are found on the main roads in areas such as Kiribathgoda, Wellampitiya, Thunmulla and the Marine Drive in Kollupitya.
“With the development work going on and road levels raised, manholes, pedestrian crossing markings and resetting of electricity posts are often neglected.

“With road expansions some of these electricity posts stand in the middle of the road and it’s dangerous at nights,” said P.Samaratunge, a resident living beside the Makola-Kiribathgoda road.Last week, an unprotected manhole claimed the life of a young woman pillion rider. Her partner too was severely injured while attempting to avoid a manhole in the middle of the Marine Drive.
