Most Government departments are slow to respond to cyber attack, reports Nadia Fazlulhaq

Hacking of Government websites will continue as long as State departments fail to seek assistance from information security professionals, and as long as there are no security audits before a website is launched.

Wasantha Deshapriya is the programme director (re-engineering government) of the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA). He says the ICTA, a wholly State-owned body, is not empowered to compel the owners of Government websites to comply with ICTA policy and adhere to ICTA-approved Web standards.

“There is an e-government policy, approved by the Cabinet of Ministers, which all government institutions have agreed to follow by the end of 2012. This includes web standards approved by our agency,” Mr. Deshapriya told the Sunday Times. Hackers have broken into some 50 Government websites in recent months. The latest victim is the Media Ministry, whose website www.media.gov.lk
