Indian Gopal wins 3rd Dhamso Chess Festival
View(s):India’s K.N Gopal (Andhra Bank,Syamalanagar) grabbed the third Dhamso International chess festival- organized by the Old Boys’ Chess Association of Dharmasoka College on behalf of chess federation of Sri Lanka and FIDE- title in convincing fashion, scoring eight points out of nine games.
One of the tournament’s top seeds, Gopal had only two draws against T. Gowtham and Abhishek Das of India. Gopal outstanding performance, in addition to garnering him a trophy and gold medal, won him Rs. 75,000.
The tournament, which was held from February 21 to 25 at the at S Thomas De Silva memorial Auditorium, Amabalangoda , saw the participation of 350 players including chessmasters from India and Germany. Etisalat Sri Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, LOLC and Sri Lanka Insurance supported the Old Boys’ Chess Association in making the event a success.
Abhishek Das, of India became first runner up with 7.5 points to win the silver medal while Yogesh Gutham, also from India, won the bronze medal with 7.5 points. Bernd Daverkausen from Germany, G.C. Anuruddha from Sri Lanka and
P.Priya of India scored 7.5 points each and tied with Abhishek Das in the second spot and share a total of Rs.106, 000 among them.
M. Rajadharshini from India bagged the women’s championship. She scored seven points to get the gold medal and the trophy, Sachini Ranasinghe, SL women’s National Champion from Musaeus College and J Rajasuriya from India also tied with M. Rajadharshini and won the silver and bronze medals respectively. They shared a total of Rs. 31,000.00 among them.
