Jaffna College survive fierce onslaught in Battle of the Golds
View(s):Amidst much expectation and excitement, the 96th Battle of the Golds between Jaffna College and St. Patrick’s College, two sides that on paper were evenly-matched although proceedings proved otherwise, got underway at the Bicknell Stadium of Jaffna College, last week.
Jaffna College scored 142 runs in the first innings. C. Abiraj gave the Patricians a real tough time by scoring 56. S. Mathusan and P. Nimalendra scored 34 and 15 runs respectively. Ajith Darveen and W.C. Livingston shared six wickets together (three each). Thanushankar, Subanesan and Jeyanthan captured one wicket each.
St. Patrick’s scored 108 at the end of the first day, for the loss of four wickets. Skipper G. R. Tuder made a quick 54. Continuing on the second day, the Patricians scored 262. F. X. Clington and B. Thanushanth scored 66 and 55 runs respectively. T. Nimalendra of Jaffna College took four for 51 runs in 28 overs. V. Sobinathsuthan took three wickets.
Again, Jaffna College scored 90 for 4 by the end of the second and final day with S. Mithusan (33) and L. Mathavaruban (31) trying their best to satisfy the screaming fans. Ajith Darveen and W.C. Livingston of St. Patrick’s once again conjured up some mesmerizing play and sent out five (three and two respectively) together.
F. X. Clington bagged the Best Batsman award while the Best Bowler accolade was given to T. Nimalendra of Jaffna College. P. Abiraj of Jaffna College secured both the Best Fielder and Best All-rounder awards. Patrician Skipper G. R. Tuder was adjudged the Man of the Match.
