A useful tree

The coconut tree is very useful in our daily routine. It is one of the main incomes for our country. Coconut is exported by us to many other foreign countries too. It is also the main income of many needy people.

The coconut tree is a versatile tree. All parts of this tree are used for many purposes. The coconut fruit is used in cooking and the husk is used in manufacturing brooms, carpets, ropes etc. Dried coconut leaves are used to weave mats and traditional food coverings Coconut treacle is made as a sweet flavouring and coconut trunks and husks are used in manufacturing eco-friendly materials. Coconut flowers are used as decorations at weddings, funerals and at some religious observances. Coconut oil is extracted from the coconut fruit and it is used as a special ingredient for food, herbal products etc. Coconut milk is extracted from scraped coconut fruit and also coconut toddy is used to produce coconut vinegar. The trunk is used to manufacture furniture.

Coconut trees can be seen mainly at Kurunegala, Polgahawela and in coastal areas. As it is very useful in our life we should protect these trees from being endangered.

Video Games

Video games are electronic games operated by a computer or a television. It was introduced in 1970. The first video game was Odyssey but it is said to be a failure so the first successful video game is Tennis Two. It was operated by an analog computer. The video game company earned a profit of 2 billion US dollars just in 8 years.
Nowadays every child is occupied with video games.

But sad to say, there are a lot of negative effects. The first effect is that children get addicted. They force their parents to buy new games. The second effect is on child behaviour and psychology. The kids start fighting and become crazy about the games and become angry. Then they develop aggressive thoughts.

The fourth problem is social isolation as children are always glued to the PC and don’t bother about what is happening around them. The fifth effect is on their education as kids always want to play games and don’t study. Reduce in physical activity causes obesity as children sit and play games for too long.

There are some benefits from computer games such as improvement of hand-eye movement and multi-tasking where they learn to do many things at one time. Quick thinking and team work are also benefits.

It is the parents’ role to limit or reduce video games, discuss with the children about the harmful effects and introduce other games and activities to entertain the child.

My mother

My mother is a housewife and is very hard working. She is always busy and does a lot of work at home. She is the first person to wake up in the morning and the last one to go to bed at night. She washes clothes, cooks and even helps us with our homework. Sometimes she tells us stories in the evening. She is very good at playing netball and she loves gardening too.

She is healthy, beautiful and a very cheerful person. I thank God for giving me such a loving and caring mother.
