Dilan faces no-faith motion over Rizana execution

A no-confidence motion against Foreign Employment Minister Dilan Perera over the handling of the case of executed Sri Lankan housemaid Rizana Nafeek, has been tabled in Parliament. In the motion signed by 14 UNP MPs, the minister is accused of failing to extend meaningful support in any manner to Ms. Nafeek, who was executed in Saudi Arabia earlier this year after being convicted of killing an infant in her care.

The motion states that the minister, while mismanaging these issues, is engaged in a futile attempt to shift the blame squarely on Saudi Arabia instead of shouldering the responsibility.

The focus of International Women’s Day activities in Sri Lanka was on the plight of nearly one million women going through severe hardship in West Asian countries. The Freedom for Women Movement and other groups staged a protest march from Hyde Park to Green Path, Colombo, carrying housemaid’s travelling bags with the cry “Duleeka then, Rizana yesterday and who’s next”.
