City & Guilds breaks the sound barrier
View(s):City&Guilds has penetrated the very core of the local music industry by promoting Sound Technology as a subject in Sri Lanka, for hard core music professionals, who need to know more about the intricacies involved in producing quality world class music, incorporating modern and futuristic technology.
This project was the brainchild of City&Guilds and conducted by Mr.Ranga Dissanayake, a legendary, Sri Lankan music producer, who was the driving force behind this endeavour. He eventually established a professional music institute under the name Hit Factory Audio Institute in 2009, in collaboration with City&Guilds to cater to these enterprising young music enthusiasts who wanted to create music on an internationally accepted level.
Mr.Fahim Shakoor , General Manager Business Development, categorically mentioned in his own words” Our purpose is to enable the people and organizations to unlock their potential and develop the knowledge and skills needed for personal and economic growth, we do this by developing relevant qualifications that are recognized and respected by employers all over the world. At City&Guilds, we also pioneer the most up-to-date delivery and assessment methods, and further the skills agenda in the UK and world wide through profile raising, sponsorship and innovative skills projects.
In the year 2011, City&Guilds started the syllabus for Certificate Level 1 offering sound technology as a part of their Sound Engineering course. This course is of importance to individuals involved with the music trade, specifically Musicians, Producers, Lyric writers, as well as those working in Production Houses, Radio and Television Stations. As Mr.Ranga Dissanayake said” Yes, it is true that almost 90% of local musicians have a practical knowledge in sound technology but sadly lack the scientific aspect of it, that’s where, City&Guilds comes in to provide a training and qualification in that particular area of music.
Young, enthusiastic student following the City&Guilds course in Sound Technology, Mr. John Isuru Eppasinghe, claimed that he had the opportunity to better his career prospects, even securing a lucrative job in the Electronic Media recently composing a song for the World Cricket 20 – 20’s and being placed 2nd internationally, quite an achievement for an up and coming City& Guilds student in Music Technology.
Mr. Nishan Pandey, after 7 long years in a production house finally decided to expand his scope in the Music Technology Industry and embarked on the initial course along with Mr.Isura Eppasinghe, and has now developed his skill in scientific recording and mixing, and owes this know-how to his association with City&Guilds and Mr.Ranga Dissanayake.
