In ancient Rome, March was supposed to be the first month of the solar year. The stormy and windy month of March was named in honour of ‘Mars’, the Roman god of war.
This is also part of the reason that many people consider the coming of March to be similar to the ferocious invasion of a windy, blustery lion (war god).

The corresponding Sinhala month is Medin. It is so called because it comes between the Yala and Maha seasons. Ancient farmers used to cultivate other crops during the
interval between Yala Kanna and Maha Kanna, which they call Meda Kanna. Hence the name Medin.
