Gateway girls take U19 ‘B’ division cager honours

Playing with perfect composure during key points of an exciting basketball match, Gateway College Colombo, after trailing 33-32 at halftime, overcame Ave Maria, Negombo 53-41 in the finals of the All-Island Under 19 ‘B’ Division Girls’ finals, played at the Ave Maria courts in Negombo.
In the semis, Gateway beat Asian International School and Ave Maria beat Colombo International School, Colombo. The tournament was conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Basketball Association and organized by Ave Maria Convent Negombo.
Gateway remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, defeating Girls’ High School Kandy 56-30 at the quarterfinals. In the preliminary round Gateway beat Bishop’s College 50-11 and Maliyadeva Girls’ School, Kurunegala 59-4.
Lihini Perera was the star of the finals and was named Most Valuable Player, while Gateway’s captain Sandali Weerasinghe was named the Best Offensive Player.
