Govt. creating rift in Buddhist clergy with Norway providing benefits to some :UNP
View(s):The United National Party (UNP) says it has received information that with the intervention of top persons in the Government, an attempt is underway to get money and other benefits from Norway for certain sections of the Buddhist clergy. UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka said this in a statement issued after Thursday’s incident at Pepiliyana. It said that instead of trying to resolve the current problems, the Government has sought to create a rift between different groups of the Buddhist clergy who had intervened to solve these problems.
“The Government’s attitude towards such incidents has been lethargic and it has shown a lack of interest,’ the UNP statement said.
“When this incidents took place, media reports revealed that the Police just stood by and watched as it was taking place. If this is correct, it is a very dangerous situation,” Mr.Attanayaka said.
He added that when UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe raised this issue in Parliament, the Government, instead of acting to stop such incidents blamed him for raising the issue.
The UNP warned that a very dangerous situation lies ahead if the Government does not address this emerging trend promptly.
“The UNP which always puts the security of the country first has directed its attention to this issue. We hope to talk to all Muslim leaders in this regard as well as members of the Buddhist clergy and clergy of other religions and come up with a plan to control this situation,” the statement added.
