What will it be like- was the question on everyone’s lips as Colomboscope 2013, curated by Ashok Ferrey -a two day festival of literature, film, art, music and dance had its first outing last weekend at the Park Street Mews. The response from Colombo’s arty crowd was more than encouraging with almost all events having a full house.

Songs from across the water: Poets Ramya Chamalie Jirasinghe and Vivimarie Vander Poorten with Ashok Ferrey

Saturday’s ‘My Life in Robes’, ‘Flying on the Other Wing’ and Sunday’s ‘Who Counted the Bodies’ were perhaps the most successful, reflecting as they did some of the current issues and the country’s volatile political and social climate. The poets collective ‘Songs from across the Water’ was another outstanding session amongst the many events across the two full days of the festival.

Acclaimed British writer Sean Borodale’s insight into his poetry and the session In the Driving Seat gave the audience a glimpse of the passion that drives authors. Question time at the end of the sessions saw the audience grabbing their chance to quiz the speakers.
Ashok Ferrey said the festival was beyond even his expectations as a curator.

“There was so much of variety. It was indeed very fulfilling as a curator,” he said laughingly adding that next time, though he would definitely get somebody else to work alongside him.

The screening of Asoka Handagama’s film ‘Flying with One Wing’, book launches, art exhibitions, dance performances and celebrity dinners completed the package which had the support of Standard Chartered Bank, the British Council and the Goethe Institute.
The Sunday Times, the Daily Mirror and HI!! Magazine were the print media sponsors for
the festival.
