Sri Lanka vehicle registrations record new low; BMW up, Maruti down
View(s):Sri Lanka’s vehicle registrations recorded a new low of 61,494 in the 1st quarter of 2013, down 39.9 per cent from 102,401 a year earlier, after an import duty hike to reduce imports, Motor Traffic Department officials said.
According to data from the department, motor car registrations, plunged to 4,763 in the first three months of 2013, down 52.8 per cent from 10,099 a year earlier.
Three wheelers fell to 21,974 in the 1st quarter of 2013, down 35.7 per cent from 35,269 a year earlier , and motor cycles fell to 49,230 down 15.3 per cent from 58,142.
Registrations of Lorries also plunged to 1921 in the first three months of 2013 down 42.3 per cent from 3330 a year earlier.
Registrations of Maruti/Suzuki and Alto cars were down 88 percent while super luxury BMW 5 series was up 411 percent motor traders said.
BMW vehicles sales are believed to be driven by duty slashed vehicle permits given to senior public sector employees .
