Inforschol- Scholarship scheme for the year 2013
View(s):With so many students who are eligible to enter university being deprived the chance to do so due to the state university intakes being limited, a majority of students do not have the opportunity to pursue higher education and achieve their cherished dreams.
Taking this fact into consideration, The Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) has over the past years been instrumental in offering a unique scholarship scheme “inforschol” for students who have obtained good Advanced Level results but who unfortunately have not been able to enter the state universities.

One of the main missions of “inforschol” is that whilst offering students the opportunity to obtain an internal degree in Software Engineering or Information Systems with Business Management from the University of Westminster, UK , paving for them the pathway to pursue higher education, it also enables the country to build up a larger IT workforce, for whom there is, currently a dearth in the industry..
Developed specially for the Advanced Level high flyers, all applications for this scheme will be collected at one central point, out of which the selected applicants will face an IQ test which will be conducted by an independent body. Students who are successful in passing the IQ test will go through a viva process, which will test their capacity to communicate in English and personality. Students who get selected through the viva test will gain eligibility to be selected for the scholarship scheme. Whilst in the past few years the selection of students for this scheme was through the application of students by advertisements placed by the Institute in national newspapers, this year IIT took a step further in involving the participation of school principals and IT teachers by inviting them for a discussion conducted at the Hotel Galadari on the 21st March 2013.
At the discussion, management personnel of IIT encouraged school principals and IT teachers to select and nominate students who they felt were deserving of this scheme, since principals and IT teachers would be the best judges of the ability and talents of their students.

Professor Alfred Perera, the Dean of IIT explained to the principals and IT teachers that “ the selected students for the scholarship scheme will go through a four month fulltime programme with IIT where the programme will impart skills and knowledge required to be effective employees in the industry. At the end of the four month period students will be able to enter industry as an intern in the area of IT or Business. As an intern they will be sponsored by selected leading organizations in Sri Lanka. The whole idea is to produce professional individuals with a well rounded training, who will also be gainfully employable by the industry. The benefit that students will have through the scholarship scheme is the ability to obtain an internal degree from the University of Westminster in addition to the five years working experience, which will make them highly marketable products both locally as well as internationally.” he stated
IIT also held a discussion for selected employers the next day at Kingsbury Hotel in Colombo where Assoc.Professor Alfred Perera explained to the employers that this includes a full scholarship where in which a student’s total tuition fees will be borne by their sponsor for the entire programme of study which will be for a period of 5 years. He pointed out that the main benefit that the sponsoring organization will receive through this, is the ability to gain a well trained employee for their organization for a period of five consecutive years.
Through the scholarship scheme, the relevant parties involved will be entering into a tri party agreement between IIT, the sponsor and the student.
During the last years, the “Inforschol” Scholarship Scheme had become immensely popular among the Industry as they find the scheme to be highly beneficial and has therefore become a great success .It has also proved to be a great benefit for the students with high A/L results by offering them immense opportunities in their chosen careers.
