DFCC Bank and its retail banking subsidiary Vardhana Bank recently hosted the 4th Annual Productivity Awards, for Schools who participated in their CSR programme the ‘6S and 3R Implementation in Schools Project’ for 2012. The highlight of this occasion was that DFCC has completed the implementation of the project in 100 schools across the country in the interiors of Anuradhapura, Badulla, Batticaloa, Galle, Jaffna, Kandy, Kalutara, Kurunegala, Matara, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, Panadura, Ratnapura, Trincomalee and Tangalle.

Whilst celebrating this achievement, prize money of Rs 1.4 million was distributed among schools which demonstrated outstanding achievements during 2012 in adopting the highly acclaimed Japanese philosophy ‘5S’ supplemented with an additional ‘S’ for Safety.

The ‘6S and 3R Implementation in Schools Project’ was launched by DFCC in 2009, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. The program was aimed at uplifting the lives of children through the transformation of their schools by introducing and implementing 5S concepts.

This enabled children in the primary classes to learn how to organize their environment leading them to be more productive in their daily activities. The 6th S raised awareness about safety. They were also introduced to Environmental stewardship by teaching them the concepts of 3R which deals with Reducing, Re-using and Recycling.

“In 2012, the Bank mainly focused on schools located in rural areas of the North and East that was ravaged by war. The schools were in very poor condition and have been neglected for many years. Giving these children an opportunity to adopt a programme of this nature in their schools was a turning point for the teachers as well as parents. It was truly rewarding to see the transformation.

Children have successfully adopted these good habits, reflected in their behavior demonstrating greater discipline and productivity, whilst being more enthusiastic to attend school. ” Rosheeni Wijesekara, Vice President, Group Corporate Communications, DFCC Bank

The following schools were awarded for implementing and adopting 6S and 3R during 2012
1st Place – Trincomalee Vigneswara Maha Vidyalaya
2nd Place – Kahawatta Primary School
3rd Place – Vavuniya Church of Ceylon Tamil Mixed School
