Achiever’s Day

Our Achiever’s Day 2012 was held on March 14, 2013 at the BMICH. Our chief guest was Hon. Chandima Weerakkody, Deputy Speaker of Parliament. Hon. J. R. Suriyapperuma and Mrs. Anoma Dissanayake were our guests of honour. The guests were welcomed by our junior western band and the event began with the lighting of the oil lamp. There were many beautiful song and dance items. I was in the welcome song and my akki was in the announcing team. Our guests and the audience enjoyed all our performances.

This was a very happy and proud day for me and my akki. I got three medals and six certificates. My akki got four gold medals, two silver medals and a lot of certificates. We were sad when the evening ended because it was a very special day for us Sujathians.

My Pre-School

Young Minds, Colombo 3 is my Pre- School. I went to Young Minds last week and when I entered the school I remembered my childhood. There were lots of children playing and running around.

The Principal Mrs. Sharmila Rajaratnam was waiting for us. She was shocked to see me after ten years. I was so happy to go back once more. The principal talked with us for a long time. She told me about how I used to come to school. She also took a picture with me. She told me that I could go and meet my class teachers and see my old classes. When I went in I saw some of the old toys that I used to play with.

I can still remember the past and how I used to play with my friends Kushagree, Brayan, Siyaraha, Avishka, Rahul, Melissa, Qumra and Tupika. How much fun we had! I even met some of my old teachers. They couldn’t recognize me at all until they saw my parents.
I was so lucky to go to Young Minds. So many memories came to my mind. That day was a very happy day for me.

Avurudu Season

Every year on the 13th and 14th of April, we as Sri Lankans celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. It is the season in which people buy new clothes and utensils for their homes. They remove cobwebs and wash their houses. Even a coat of paint is given to the house.
New Year kevili are made to fill the New Year table. The streets are filled with people who are on their way to do shopping for the New Year. Many schools have their ‘Avurudu Festivals’ with the start of April. This time our school has the Avurudu festival on
April 2, 2013.

The New Year is one time of the year that families get together to celebrate their time together.  The New Year table is filled with many kevili like kevum, kokis,  mun-kevum, aggala etc. On the 13th, the nonagethe starts. Before this time we have to finish all our work and remove all dirt and waste from the house. During the nonagethe time it is not good to do any work.

By the end of the nonagethe, ‘Avurudu’ dawns. We eat the kevili and kiribath at the auspicious time. Afterwards the young people worship the elders and obtain blessings. The next few days are holidays and afterwards people set off at the auspicious time to start work.

This is how ‘Avurudu’ is mainly celebrated in Sri Lanka.
