CJ 43 to file objections on May 17
View(s):Non-declaration of assets and liabilities allegation
Chief Justice 43 Shirani Bandaranayake will reply to the allegations of non-declaration of assets and liabilities and file her objections on May 17 to certain Commissioners of the Bribery Commission, legal sources close to Chief Justice Bandaranayake said. Dr. Bandaranayake, who visited the Bribery Commission along with her lawyers on April 1, has requested time to file her objections to certain Commissioners whose family members had played a significant role in favour of the impeachment against her.
She has also informed the Commission that she was willing to reply the allegations if the Commission provided what those allegations were. Accordingly two officers provided her the allegations against her in relation to her assets and liabilities declarations, the sources said.
The sources also dismissed claims that she was given time finally to file objections. When she was summoned to the Bribery Commission on March 18, she told the investigating officers that she could not make a statement as she had not been informed about the allegations.
The Commission comprised Chairman, Justice Jagath Balapatabendi, Justice L.K.Wimalachandra (Commissioner) and Dr. Jayantha Wickremaratne (Commissioner). Dr Bandaranayake was first summoned before the Bribery Commission after she was impeached by Parliament in January. The impeachment procedure came under heavy criticism both locally and internationally.
The Bribery Commission had also filed a case in the Colombo Magistrate’s Court against her husband Pradeep Kariyawasam, in connection with a share transaction at the National Savings Bank while he was functioning as its chairman.
