Talawakelle Tea Estates PLC won the Inter-Plantations Rugby Sevens tournament for the fourth consecutive year, creating a record in the plantation sector as no other team has continued a winning streak for such an extended period.
The tournament, which has a history of over 19 years, was organised and funded this year by the Dickoya and Maskeliya Cricket Club.
Talawakelle played a very high standard of rugby throughout the day and did not let their opponents score a single try against them in all three of their preliminary round matches. The final match was played between Talawakelle Tea Estates and Pussallawa Plantations, where Talawakelle won 28-14 to claim the Cup. The team was captained by Sarath Ranaweera and coached by Mohommed Faizal (for the fourth consecutive year). Faizal was in-charge of the Trinity College Under 14 outfit and is presently the head coach of St Sylvester’s College Kandy. Shashika Wickramasinghe was adjudged the Player of the Tournament. Sanjeewa Perera (Mobby) looked after the fitness of the lads.
