Sri Lanka’s reining national snooker champion and the defending champion of the M.J.M. Lafir memorial snooker tournament retained his title when he defeated M. Rimzan by five frames to one in the nine frames snooker final played at the MICH billiard parlour yesterday.
It was sweet revenge for Susantha who underwent a shocking 3-2 defeat at the hands of the same opponent in a round robin match played three days ago.
Susantha smarting from that defeat did not take things easy as he began with a bang to outsmart Rimzan who was no where near his earlier form and was completely rattled by the 16 time national snooker champion.
Defending champion Susantha took an early lead by winning the first frame with ease and though he conceded the fourth frame he came back with vengeance to take the fifth frame before the short break.
The resumption saw him wrap up the game with a comfortable 66/12 win in the sixth frame. This was Susantha’s third successive title having won the previous two editions in 1999 and 2009.
Meanwhile Sri Lanka’s Abdul Sattar had a cake walk win in the M.J.M. Lafir memorial billiard tournament which was played concurrently at the same venue when he brushed off the challenge of India’s Magesh Selvarasu with a five frames to one win in the nine frames final.
Sattar who underwent a close first frame defeat struck back to take five frames at a stretch from there on to carry away the billiard trophy to win the M.J.M. Lafir memorial trophy for the first time.
The 9th M.J.M. Lafir Memorial Billiard and Snooker championship was conducted by Moors Islamic Cultural Hone (MICH) in honour of Sri Lanka’s first ever world champion in any sport the billiard maestro M.J.M. Lafir who won the World Billiards title in 1973.
The tournament which got underway on March 25 with the qualifying tournament was contested by 125 cueists in the snooker and 30 in the billiard category which included cueists from India.
The champions in both the categories apart from the trophy received a cash award of Rs. 50,000/- while the runners up received Rs. 25,000/-. Besides that special cash awards were presented to the highest break and the most exciting player.
