Last week’s Business Times news headline on ‘Conflicts within a Bank Board’ provoked me to write this letter in utter disgust. As an ex Central Bank staffer I have mixed opinions about the way the Central Bank is currently progressing.

To be fair, the governor though he is highly controversial has brought in a private sector flavour into the bank. Much was expected of him as a very charismatic and good- natured chartered accountant and after having functioned as a top administrator. Unfortunately he has dragged himself and the institution into an unnecessary debate on a regular basis in the last couple of years. As a consequence no one takes the governor’s utterances seriously while veteran economist and Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundara, has stayed away from the controversy. The current governor has given two former senior Deputy Governors many openings in the private sector and banks while the rest of the staffers who retired were never given such positions.

Treasury Secretary Dr. Jayasundara should at least now put in place a circular to prevent government positions getting doled out like this and ensure equal treatment to all.
